Austism

So autism yes?
More of a mental disorder than a physical disease but its interesting none the less!

First things first I need to tell yous guys something:

When I was researching autism from a reliable source like a good little student and there I found the sketchiest block of text describing "other treatments" for autism.

So here it is:

Other therapies:  There are a number of controversial therapies or interventions available, but few, if any, are supported by scientific studies.  Parents should use caution before adopting any unproven treatments.  Although dietary interventions have been helpful in some children, parents should be careful that their child’s nutritional status is carefully followed

Controversial therapies? Doesn't sound too great...not supported by science? Well, that's not handy either! Parents should use with caution. How about parents shouldn't use controversial non scientific treatments at all? Really when I read this it sound like weird cult ritual. So no you shouldn't be using controversial stuff on your autistic child. Although the diet thing seems relevant.

This is so me when I read it.

So back to autism

Also, April is autism month :)

its important to understand the signs behind autism:

Other symptoms:
compulsive behavior, such as stacking things
repetitive movement, rocking back and forth moving your hands often
Superior perception and attention span

I know someone with autism. He told me that "he didn't want anybody's pity for his condition,he just wanted people to be aware of it".
I think people just need to be aware of what autism is and what symptoms it causes. Besides that people with autism are regular people and a great to know.

Autism comes in varying degrees, they use a spectrum to measure the level of autism one has.

The cause of autism is unknown but has to do with genetics and external environment.
There is no "cure" for autism asides from anti-psychotic mental medication  like anti depressants and medication for anxiety.
Also, education is a huge part in helping people with autism.
This includes:
speech and language therapy
social skills training

I think people with autism are very interesting and have a lot to offer the world.
If you think someone with autism has a lower capacity than you, you're a jerk!

Anyway, happy autism month!

  1. I had a friend who was autistic, albeit highly functioning. It makes perfect sense that people with autism are often misunderstood and belittled by "normal" people. The picture with the signs of autism is helpful in identifying it, and I agree about controversial therapies. Are parents really that desperate to "fix" their child? Great post.

  2. Even though people often ask not to pity them its hard to not wish they had an easier daily living life as some people do. I think the worst part of everything is the bullying they often receive. Its terrible how some people view them, but how could we make all that disappear??

  3. My friend's little brother has autism and I never really knew any details about it until now. Weird, untested treatments probably aren't the best way to go like you said, but changing nutritional habits could help I think. Very informational, great post!
