Nurses help with diseases (diagnosis, daily care ect.)! I
swear they Do!!
So this is very relevant, yes?

Lets talk about nurses. The percent of male nurses is minute compared to the percent of male doctors. Why is this?Is nursing more of a female oriented career? 5.8% of nurses are male while about 71.03% of doctors are male. (This is in The U.S.A). For some reason, nursing is seen as a very feminine profession. It’s hard for guys to want to go into nursing. However, nursing is such a cool career path. I feel that its seriousness is lowered because people think it’s "a girl’s holding someones hand, when really the doctors do all the work". This really frustrates me. People barely know what nursing is. It’s serious job. You need to keep track or you can kill someone. If you administer the wrong food, medicine or do an injection improperly, you can kill someone. Many nurses have studied past their graduate degree and have a lot to offer. People would rather see a doctor at a hospital than a nurse, when in reality nurses have training in diagnosis too. Some nurses even have PhD's meaning they have gone through JUST AS MUCH training as a doctor. So … if you thing you would rather see someone with a white coat, you might not be educated in the fact that doctors aren’t the only people in the hospital that know about medicine. If a nurse doesn’t know what you have they can ask a doctor. JUST LIKE how a doctor can refer you to a specialist because they can’t diagnose you.
So here''s what people think:
It’s a cute picture and sure nurses can be sexy… but they have lots of responsibility and are very smart people!! There not some ditz from an some kind of erotic fantasy.
Here an actual Nurse (as actual as you can get on Google images…)
Still sexy (ha ha), BUT
SMART(and yes they can wear coats too).
Final thought:
Is a profession only taken seriously if there’s a male
involved? This is terrible especially considering that male nurses are “taken
more seriously” and earn higher salaries.
So all in all: be
nice to your nurse; they do a hella lot for you and they really care about
heath care.
I'm surprised nurses don't get much recognition. The fact that they choose the job knowing that they're not going to be appreciated but do it anyway because it's a good thing to do demands respect. As for the gender, I think it's a traditional gender role thing. Women handle the "caretaker" sort of jobs and men do all the "hard" work. This is really stupid because, like you said, they all get the same education. Ridiculous.
ReplyDeleteBlaaah, yea this topic really gets me annoyed. Like there's this article I read, that was about how nurses with PhDs can't use the term doctor in a hospital. This is because the "real" doctors don't want them too. D: It just bothers me. ALSO did you know that 55% of nurses in Korea have been sexually harassed by doctors they work with? BLA IM NEVER WORKING THERE. Its just creepy.
DeleteAlso, this post was totally inspired by your fem blog. I learn a lot from it!
It's perfectly believable that female nurses get sexually harassed but not using the word "doctor"...? That doesn't even make sense! It's so dumb that the important things that women do get totally overlooked just because we're women. And yay I'm glad I inspire you! That actually makes me super happy :D
DeleteThat's so cool that you want to be a nurse. I don't really understand why people don't respect nurses. I mean, they go to school for a long time and they know their stuff. They have just as many responsibilities, and they take crap all the time for being the "lesser" job in the medical field. I think nurses are awesome. They provide great care, and often make you feel more comfortable if you have to stay in a hospital setting for a prolonged amount of time. As Carli said, the gender roles are just ridiculous, but unfortunately a reality in the nursing profession. They all receive the same education so they should all be treated the same way!
